After the capture of Michael Owen, Sir Alex went on to sign another player in the likes of Gabriel Obertan. At first when I heard about this, I was thinking to myself, "who the heck is that???" But you must remember, a few years back when Sir Alex bought Cristiano Ronaldo, no one knew who he was or what he could do. Look at where he is now.
So, who knows how talented this young player can be. At the age of just 20, he has loads of time to develop and improve on his skills and game play. And where and who else would be better to help him do that then Manchester United and Sir Alex.
For those who don't know much about this young lad, here is a little bit about him.
About Gabriel Obertan
He was born on the 26th of February 1989 in Pantin, France. He started his career with his local club Pantin in 1997 - 2002 and later moved on to a higher level of playing with Paris FC in 2002. He spent a year training with Paris FC and like most youths of the club, he moved on to Paris-Saint Germain in 2003. He continued working hard on his football and a year later (2004), he joined the famed Clairefontaine Academy (the finest football academy in the world where only the best players from the lle-de-France region train there) in order to further his development. There, he was spotted by scouts of Bordeaux. After a year training with the Clairefontaine, he moved to Bordeaux to train with them.
So in 2005, Gabriel Obertan joined Bordeaux and after only a year playing in the reserves, he agreed to a professional contract with the club in 2006. He was given the number 26 shirt and made his debut on 30th September 2006 against Valenciennes at the age of 17. For the 2006/2007 season, Gabriel Obertan played a total of 17 games for the club (16 of them as a substitute). The following season would be a much better season for him. He signed a contract extension with the club and played a total of 26 games and scoring 2 goals for the club. But because of the huge amount of players at Bordeaux, his playing time was very limited. So, Gabriel was loaned out to FC Lorient for the remainder season (2008/2009). There he played a total of 15 games and scored a goal during his time there.
On the 6th of July 2009, French newspapers announced that an agreement between Bordeaux and Manchester United has been made for the transfer of Gabriel Obertan. He went on to take his medical the following day and on the 8th of July 2009 signed his contract and officially became a Manchester United player. The transfer fee for Gabriel was said to be in the region of £3 million.
So how well he does at United, only time will tell. But I personally feel that he has the talent to make it big there. If he works really hard and pushes for a place in the starting eleven, he will surely succeed. All the best to him. =)
